Hermann inherits a mansion and a nation’s unresolved time. Julia must decide what relation can survive when every room has already been interpreted.
Hermann von Kunstdorf is an artist, transgender woman, and mother trying to make an inherited Mansion answer to the living while history and the dead continue to make claims upon it. Julia's future is not simply another room in her mother's project.
The Mansion is lived in as well as haunted. Children, arguments, objects, meetings, warmth, art, practical rules, and comedy occupy the same rooms as the historical weight of 1927.
THE COMPOSITION
Prelude.
Three movements.
The mansion opens. Schattendorf enters. A life begins in recollection under the pressure of what the reader already knows.
Private relation and public fracture deepen as the house, family, and political world learn different forms of exclusion.
July 1927 returns at changed depth. Repair is attempted without converting the dead into instruments of redemption.
“The ledger remains on the table during public hours,” he said. “At night it will be placed in the lower shelf, unlocked.” Frau Klemper said, “No shelf.”
“Why?”
“Shelves make things wait politely.”
Julia said, “On the table.”
“Always?” Adornfeld asked. “Always until it becomes false.”
“How will we know?” Frau Klemper said, “We will begin arguing. Rooms learn that way.”
