The love story is simple: Lin Reyes is trying to recover her wife, Nisha.
The narrative movement is simple enough to state: Lin Reyes is trying to recover her wife, Nisha. The systems she encounters make that simple desire increasingly difficult to preserve in its own terms.
Each jurisdiction offers a way to measure, classify, preserve, optimize, or explain human existence. The satire acquires its stakes from the distance between what those systems can record and what Lin and Nisha know of one another.
THE SIX OPERATIONS
Five jurisdictions.
One fault-line.
Total resolution promises truth and instead makes the object unbearable, all pores and no skin.
History and relation become positions in a formal system whose beauty cannot redeem what it organizes.
Choice is redesigned as a menu whose available answers preserve the institution that posed the question.
The reader enters the gap between authorized accounts and the lives each account incompletely preserves.
Read last. The recursion anchor reveals the prior break that the numbered cycle has been circling.
Lin stared at the word voluntary.
Nisha had written I need to try this.
Voluntary was not the same as free.
Lin thought of leaving the pod, walking back out through the arch, returning to noise and keys and pain that belonged to her. But Nisha was here.
And if rankings were the toll, Lin would pay them in whatever currency they demanded, so long as she didn't pay with her marriage.
